According to recent research in the journal Sexologies, those who consume hentai seem to vary from those who consume other forms of pornography in a number of ways. However, their attraction to people and desire for a human interaction do not seem to be any different from those of other people.

Few studies have directly looked into hentai, despite the fact that several have looked at psychological aspects of pornography usage. Jonathan Park, the study’s author, stated that his fascination with Japanese culture fueled his interest in the subject.
The researcher clarified, “Like many weebs and otakus, I love anime, doujinshi, anime music, anime video games, and waifus.” Regarding the pornographic aspect of things, I became interested in hentai and human pornography as a young adolescent, much like a lot of other people. However, a lot of scholars and guest lecturers on pornography that I have heard nearly always attempt to steer clear of discussing hentai. The survey replies of 208 participants, who were on average 20.90 years old, served as the basis for the study. Of those surveyed, about 29% had consumed hentai, 38% had viewed non-hentai pornography, and 33% had not consumed any pornography in the previous 12 months. Not unexpectedly, compared to non-porn and non-Hentai customers, hentai consumers thought anime character images were more beautiful. However, compared to non-Hentai or non-porn consumers, Hetai consumers did not find real-life person photos to be any more or less appealing.
The urge to have a love relationship with an anime character was also higher among hentai consumers. However, they shared the other groups’ desire to be in a romantic relationship with a genuine person.
Across the three categories of pornography consumers, there was no discernible difference in the ratings for beauty and romantic desire for actual people. Therefore, the researchers hypothesized that increased attraction and amorous desire for anime characters could be exclusive to hentai but not human pornography.
Since attachment avoidance is an interpersonal attachment type that is marked by emotional detachment, Park and his colleagues had anticipated that hentai customers would score higher on this measure. However, in terms of avoidant attachment, hentai consumers were no different from non-porn or non-hentai consumers. However, compared to female non-porn consumers, female hentai users (but not males) tended to exhibit greater degrees of nervous attachment. Put differently, comments like “I worry about being abandoned” were more likely to be agreed with by female hentai buyers.
The results emphasize how crucial it is to distinguish between hentai and human pornography. “Many researchers weren’t separating hentai from human pornography in their definitions, methods, and analyses in their previous research,” Park stated. As someone who watches media about hentai, I find it hard to determine if a lot of the latest findings from research on pornography apply to hentai viewers or not. This is significant since, for many years, hentai has been among the most widely used forms of pornography worldwide.
He clarified, “If two sizable and disparate groups of people (such as hentai consumers and non-hentai consumers) differ on something as straightforward as their romantic desire and attraction to anime characters, then they most likely also differ on more complex and nuanced traits and behaviors.” Longtime hentai lovers, for instance, are more inclined to look for doujinshi than those who are unfamiliar with the term and just view human porn. That being said, our survey did not even distinguish between the various kinds of hentai and porn fetishes that exist (such as cosplay, bug, guro, x-ray, etc.). We definitely couldn’t account for everything because our study was only one effort to distinguish between hentai and human pornography.
The researchers cautioned that the conclusions drawn from a number of studies, including examinations of problematic pornography usage, could or might not be applicable to hentai users.
